How did you get this internship?

As an undergraduate at Indiana University, I was a student athlete on the women’s soccer team.  In fall of 2015 I was finishing up my final season of eligibility, at which time I connected with our Assistant Athletic Director for Operations and Sports Administration on an away trip.  After follow up conversations, I began working as an unpaid intern in the spring of my senior year for administration.  Prior to graduation in May, I was hired as a paid intern with a duel role in Administration and Development (which is called Varsity Club at IU).

What was crucial in getting you this internship that made you standout from other applicants?

I believe my biggest asset as an unpaid intern, that made me standout from other applicants, was that I was constantly present and aware.  By present I mean that I was constantly at every event, even if that meant running from early morning practice, to class, to my internship, to lifting, and back to the internship.  I was also committed to helping out everyone in the department from relatively simple tasks, to a more committed projects where I would have to talk with leaders from the NCAA and various conferences.  This turned out to be incredibly beneficial, not only to getting hired, but also because I now know almost every coach, administrator, staff member, and even the President of the University and his staff personally, which has allowed me to establish more responsibility and trust from everyone.

In being “aware,” I made sure that I did my best to problem solve before getting told what to do.  I believe the biggest mistake is that people wait to be told when and how to do things.  If you are constantly aware, you can stay one step ahead of issues or projects that might come up allowing you more time to problem solve on your own and produce a sought after result.  This also gives the leadership more reason to look to you first for any opportunity that might come up.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

What I enjoyed most about my internship was having a duel role in administration and development because at one point or another I had the opportunity to see every aspect of what it takes to run a power five athletic department.  I learned so much and met so many people while proving I could manage a heavy load from both leadership teams.

In October I was hired full time in the Varsity Club and I am even more thankful now for my time working with both administration and development.  From that I now better understand the many dynamics that are limiting and opportunity for the two to work together to enhance the overall student athlete, donor, and fan experience at IU.

I also enjoy working for a school that without a doubt changed my life through the student athlete experience I received.  The passion I have for IU has really helped me to connect with donors and seek out opportunities to give back to my school.

Where do you want to/plan to go from this opportunity?

After getting hired full time with the Varsity Club, my current plan is to remain at IU for the time being while determining if development will be the route for me as I look to climb the ladder within athletics.  Due to my prior internship, I am still involved in many aspects of administration through numerous committees, so I am thrilled to also continue to be wary of how I could see an administrative role in my future.  I do believe that if I find administration as a better fit I would love to come back to a smaller school, like Central Michigan, but remain at a Power Five school if I choose to work in development.

What is your formal title? Adidas brand ambassador and Independent Contractor

The biggest responsibility as an adidas brand ambassador is to integrate a big name

brand with the students of Central Michigan University and have the brand become a

life and traditions. Events and contests are planned around big school games or happenings,

like rival games, final exams, spring break, etc., that give students the opportunity to connect with the adidas brand and win free gear.  To do this, a marketing plan for the entire academic school year was created and followed, as well as personally posting on social media outlets, Twitter and Instagram multiple times a week.  Our bosses meet with us weekly via Skype due to headquarters bring in Boston, MA and during the meetings we discuss upcoming events, product distribution and meet with executives from adidas headquarters.  Also, we are responsible for visiting local adidas retail stores and documenting the set-up of adidas clothes and products.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Working with a large name brand company.  It’s never a boring day during the internship as I get to see the ins and outs of a world known company and brand.  Also, I love the look on students faces when they win free gear.  I really got to see the student’s passion for their school during some of the contests we ran and that in its own was refreshing and rewarding to witness.

Where do you want to/plan to go from this opportunity?

Definitely into sports marketing.  This internship allowed me to finally specifically figure out what I want to do with my career, and it makes me so excited for the future!

responsibility to help monitor all areas of our athletics department to ensure we are

following NCAA rules. This includes monitoring recruiting activities for certain sports

including approving official and unofficial visits that recruits make to our campus, as

well as off campus contact that our coaches make with prospective student-athletes.

I also help monitor practice hours for our student-athletes to make sure we are not going

over the permissible amount of time allowed per week. I also assist with the distribution of complimentary admissions for our student-athletes and prospects for competitions on campus. In addition to that, I also prepare education materials to distribute to people in our department to educate them on NCAA rules.

While at CMU I spent three years as an intern working in athletics compliance. Many of the responsibilities I had at CMU are very similar to what I do now for Ohio State.

What do you enjoy most about your internship? I enjoy being able to interact with many different personalities in the athletic department. Almost everything that our athletics department does has to have compliance approval to ensure we are following NCAA rules. Our office is constantly in contact with coaches, student-athletes, and all other departments on campus that are involved in athletics.

Where do you want to/plan to go from this opportunity? I’m not sure. I really enjoy working in college athletics, and I have enjoyed working in compliance. I don’t plan on doing anything different.

Name: Amanda L. Mitchell

Who do you work for?

Laingsburg High School Athletic Department

What is your formal title?

I am a student intern for the athletic director at Laingsburg High School

Please explain your duties and responsibilities:

My duties include everything from game-day operations to chaperoning, to be a point of

contact for the Laingsburg community. With the majority of my internship happening during the fall sport season, I have worked mainly with the JV and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams as well at the JV and Varsity football teams. I have assisted in setting up the scorer’s table (volleyball) and the press box (football). I have helped with ticket sales on both ends; selling tickets at the gate as well as tracking ticket stubs and counting money at the end of events.

I have also assisted the athletic director with different projects this semester. One of these projects was looking at area high school enrollment numbers and putting together a potentially new athletic conference. Another project was updating the high school’s record board in the gymnasium. Finally, the largest project of them all has been an internal review of the communication processes and effectiveness within the athletic department and with their stakeholders (coaches, athletes, fans, boosters, etc.).

How did you get this internship?

I emailed Jason Dykstra, the athletic director at Laingsburg High School. I started out by introducing myself including what I was going to school for, and explaining what type of position I was looking for. He was very interested in having an intern this fall, so I went in one morning and met with him to talk about duties for the semester and it just evolved from there.

What was crucial in getting you this internship that made you standout from other applicants?

To my knowledge there were no other “applicants” but I took the initiative to reach out to the athletic director on my own. I wasn’t afraid of being turned down because I really had nothing to lose by asking him about an intern position.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

My favorite part about working at Laingsburg High School is the experience I have been able to get. Being a small town community, I have been able to have my hand in on almost everything. They have strong athletic programs, therefore leading to extended seasons. This has allowed me to not only build relationships with the athletes and coaches, but also the parents and sports boosters.

Where do you want to/plan to go from this opportunity?

I am working on furthering my education and pursing a Master of Arts in Sport Administration. My short-term goals are to be an athletic directory, and I think I would enjoy working in a similar small town school. You really begin to form relationships with those in the athletic department and it makes it easier to feel connected. I think by taking this step, building connections with athletes, coaches, and other sport administrators, I can work toward my end-goal of becoming a sport psychologist.

What do you enjoy most about your internship? I enjoy the game operations of it and what it truly takes to run a whole entire baseball game. You never notice it as a fan until you actually work. Then you know exactly how everything runs and it changes your whole aspect on the challenges of running the game.

Where do you want to/plan to go from this opportunity? I hope I can take advantage of the connections I gained through this internship and possibly gain a full time position.

           Rio games.

  • Worked with mobile application developers to create apps for use before and during the

  • Helped construct and facilitate multiple national coach leadership conferences.

  • Corresponded daily with customers regarding Team USA mandated online sport safety course (Safesport).

How did you get this internship?

  • I graduated in 3.5 years from MSU. All my work experience had been in sports, and my dream was to work for the USOC, because 1. It’s the best/biggest sporting event in the world 2. It is the perfect combination of my major (Comparative Cultures and Politics) and my love (sports). I had applied the summer before my senior year and didn’t get it. Then I realized I would be graduating a semester early and took the chance to apply again for the spring. I ended up getting it in October and started in January.

What was crucial in getting you this internship that made you standout from other applicants?

  • I had worked for MSU Athletic Communications for three years and I had interned for the Special Olympics the summer before. The head of my department at the USOC told me had hired me not only for those experiences, but also because my academic background was unique. It was a great combination of international cultures and sports.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

  • So many things, but mainly the people I met and the experiences. I lived so closely with Para-Olympians and Olympians. They are all absolutely incredible people who have such a zest for life and an amazing work ethic. The people that I worked with in the office were also amazing. They are so dedicated to their jobs, and are so passionate about what they do. I also got to live, eat, and train in Olympic level facilities. I spent whole days with Olympic and Para-Olympic coaches. I got to travel to two of the premiere training sites in the world.

Interview after winning Pistons Sales Project in a PES class

What was crucial in getting you this internship that made you standout from other applicants?

Having some people on staff from the Palace who already knew my commitment to any task at hand helped and then going the extra mile with thank you notes, follow ups, and being genuine during the interview process.

What do you enjoy most about your internship?

Getting to know the part-time staff is what I enjoyed the most about my internship. I spent my down time talking to them via the phone if she called about their schedule or any moment I got a chance to see how they were doing throughout an event really benefitted me when I needed someone to do extra for me. I also think that after a 12-15 hour event day going from in and out of the office to the venue and seeing it come to life to it being torn down is such a good feeling. There are so many things that can go wrong during an event, that you roll with the punches and at night when the event is done and you reflect on the good and the bad with everyone, there is a feeling of success and also a feeling of wanting to get better the next event.

I reached out to the founder of the club. There was no formal job posting, but my desire and commitment proved that I would be an asset to their organization.

How much responsibility I had. As a new minor league soccer team, the founder (my “boss”) was so busy so I pretty much did everything with a couple of other interns.
